The Santa Cruz Mountains Appellation encompasses more than 850 square miles beginning from San Francisco down the Peninsula to Silicon Valley and Gilroy over to Watsonville, Monterey Bay and back up to Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay. Due to the size of the Santa Cruz Mountains wine region it is often useful for our visitors to plan their trip by winery hours of operation, sub-regions or by urban winery locations.

Thomas Fogarty Wine Estate:
Beginning in 1978, Dr. Thomas Fogarty and Winemaker Michael Martella planted vines and built a small estate winery in the rugged Santa Cruz Mountains, 2,000 feet above sea level. The coastal climate, high elevation and thin rocky soils are unique and define the authentic site-expressive wines. Today a new generation continues the founders’ spirited pursuit. Tom Fogarty Jr. runs Thomas Fogarty Wine Estate. Winemaker Nathan Kandler produces distinctive Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from 25 acres of estate vineyards, 8 unique sites, in the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation.

Trout Gulch Vineyards is the current evolution of zeal that Père et Fils, Bernie and Gerry Turgeon share in their dedication to producing wines of extraordinary character. Their focus is Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA but extends to include varietals and AVA’s that embody time in a bottle. Their pursuit is the expression of terroir: grapes, sun, soil, water, and air.
Producing award-winning Santa Cruz Mountains AVA Pinot Noir & Chardonnay from their mountain estate since 1987. The Turgeon Family extols the virtues of the Mountains, wines of unrestrained varietal character in the Burgundian tradition. Wine tasting and tours are available at the winery by arrangement, 427-C Swift Street on Santa Cruz’s West Side. Special Events include Santa Cruz Mountains Passport Saturdays, Vintners’ Festival, Dare to Pair, Dinner Markets as well as other scheduled Surf City Vintners’ events.

Pioneer winemaker Bernie Turgeon replanted the vineyard on Trout Gulch Rd in Aptos to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the early 80′s in his quest for the Holy Grail – Burgundian style wines of sublime character from the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Turgeon family had founded J. Lohr winery in the early 70′s along with partner Jerry Lohr. Bernie’s son Gerry took over production in 1999 upon Bernie’s retirement. Their efforts were assisted along the way by Paul Woffard and currently by Barry Jackson. There have been many successes during the two+ decades that lead to the current evolution of the winery which still features wines made from the old estate farmed by Richard Alfaro as well as hand selected wines from outstanding vineyards in the Central Coast. The winery is located on Swift St. within the Equinox Methode Champenoise Cellars. Trout Gulch wines are marketed throughout the Greater Bay Area by Monterey Bay Wine Company. Meet the Business Owner: Gerry Turgeon
I grew up in the business, planting an extensive vineyard in the Arroyo Seco, Monterey Co. along with my father in the early seventies. I attended UC Davis studying viticulture and enology. I worked the harvest and crush as well as hospitality and marketing at our family winery, formerly Turgeon & Lohr Winery until starting the first micro-brewery on the Central Coast in 1985 (Santa Cruz Brewing Co. & Front St. Pub) with my father, Bernie. It takes a lot of beer to make wine! We planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on Trout Gulch Rd. in the Aptos foothills and began producing award winning wines from the estate concurrently in 1987. The winery has evolved to its present incarnation as part of the Surf City Vintners along the Swift St. corridor in West Santa Cruz. I presently make about 1000 cases annually consisting mainly of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon blanc, Grenache blanc, Cinsault, Grenache, Merlot, and a rose blend known as “la belle petite poulette“.
