In the beautiful Santa Cruz Mountains, just above the fog line, one discovers the partnership of climate and soil, idyllic for the growth of the delicate wine grape. Warm afternoons and cool evening breezes offer year-round perfection for the production of the Bruzzone Family Chardonnay. Hand-harvested in late Fall, oak barrel processing creates a medium-bodied, clean wine with hints of citrus and apple, followed by the gentle entry of a light coffee flavor.
The Bruzzone Family Vineyard was established in 1999. After great success with their Chardonnay, the family added an additional 7 acres dedicated to the growth of this notable varietal and created an additional planting for their Pinot Noir.

Burrell School’s origins date back to 1854 when Lyman J. Burrell settled the rough wilderness that is now home to our winery and Estate vines. Carrying on the more than 130 year old tradition at the School, David and Anne Moulton began development of the Estate vineyard in 1973. At a 1,600 foot elevation, the site faces to the southwest. Soils are a complex mixture of loam and shale due to our close proximity to the San Andreas Fault.
Nearby Monterey Bay brings warm days and cool nights. This results in a unique microclimate, perfect for long, slow ripening of cool climate grapes.
Initial plantings were to Chardonnay and Merlot, with Pinot Noir added in 2002. Cultivation and spraying are done with heritage Cletrac tractors; pruning, seasonal operations and picking are all done by hand.
From growing to harvesting, the goal is toward the best wine grapes possible in order to produce distinctive, concentrated wines reflective of their mountain home.

Winemaker George Troquato combines flavorful grapes with traditional winemaking methods to compose the Medallion Series and Watermark Portfolio of wines. Vineyards are selected after a thorough screening of soils, climate and cultural practices as well as a formal tasting of their library wines. The fruit is hand harvested in the morning cool and swiftly moved to nearby cellars where it is gently handled with state-of-the-art equipment. Carefully fermented in stainless steel tanks or small oak barrels, the wines are imprinted with distinct off-the-vine aromas and flavors.

In 1987, co-owners Bill and Brenda Murphy decided to plant a few rows of Chardonnay in their Saratoga backyard, both for landscaping purposes and to realize their dreams of being small-scale vintners. A few years later, the wines produced from this small backyard vineyard were good enough to sell to the public. It was at this point that Clos LaChance formed into a commercial winery. The first released wines were from the 1992 vintage. The next 15 years would take the Murphy’s from 200 cases of wine produced to 80,000; 3/4 of an acre to 150 acres planted and 20 full-time and 25 seasonal employees.
Clos LaChance Winery takes its name from the small fenced-in area encompassing a vineyard (Clos) and from co-owner Brenda Murphy’s maiden name (LaChance). The Murphy’s chose the Hummingbird as the winery’s symbol for both its aesthetic beauty and its ability to keep other birds away from the grapes.
Together with their daughters, Bill and Brenda have created a multi-generational, family-owned and operated winery. It is their dream that the third generation will eventually take over the business.

Dominick and Gloria Chirichillo’s choice of name for their winery is a reflection of their commitment to their Italian heritage and the tradition of family winemaking. In 1955 in New York, Dominick who is called Domenico in Italian was introduced to these traditions by his Nonno (grandfather), Domenico Giovinazzo. In the basement of their home was a wine press that Nonno showed Dominick; passing down from one generation to another the love of handcrafting wine.
Dominick’s passion for winemaking took him from amateur competitions, while he lived on the East Coast, to commercial status after moving to Northern California. Moving to California has enabled Dominick to choose his grapes hands-on from selected vineyards in Napa Valley, Sonoma’s Central Coast, Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley, Amador County and the Lodi District. Not to mention he is a member of the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association, where he sources Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. As of fall 2010, the wines of Domenico have won 300 Medals for wines produced from these various regions!
Prior to opening Domenico Winery, Dominick and Gloria’s passion for the wine business was shared with others on both the East and West Coasts through Bacchus Winemaking Club. This membership club enabled many more people to create their own wines with custom labels. Over 200,000 cases of wine have been created by amateur winemakers on both the East and West Coasts through the years. A Coastal History
In 1934, winemaker John Gemello began producing big, hearty red wines from grapes grown locally in the coastal hills above Santa Clara Valley, California. He crafted them in the tradition of the fine red varietals of his native Italy. Patrons of his winery consumed his reds with great gusto, and so these robust wines were in great demand
In the late 1970′s, the winery founded by John Gemello some forty years earlier was relocated from Santa Clara Valley to Half Moon Bay, California. The winery,renamed Obester, continued to produce big, hearty red wines under the Gemello label and newer wines, Reisling, Sauvignon Blanc, Sangiovese, and sparkling, under the Obester Label. These handcrafted, award winning wines became the signature of Obester Winery.
The new millenium marked a renaissance at Obester Winery, the winery founded by John Gemello in the early 1930′s. A new vintner, Kendyl Kellogg, has returned the winery to it’s roots producing complex, full-bodied red wines under a new label, Nebbia Signature.

McCarthy Family Estate Vineyard has created an exceptional, limited production Cabernet Sauvignon for the sophisticated wine connoisseur. Nestled in foothills above Los Gatos, McCarthy Family Estate Vineyard encompasses six acres of dry farmed, organically grown vineyards, with a desired southwest exposure, on steep naturally draining slope, which continues the historical growing of Cabernet grapes in the Santa Cruz Mountain Appellation, and more specifically the Jesuits growing Cabernet grapes over a 100 years ago on their contiguous parcel.
The first harvest, of primarily three year old vines, was in 2006, which amounted to a very small quantity. 2007 & 2008 harvests have increased exponentially and full production should be reached in 3 to 4 years, 2011 or 2012.

Mount Eden Vineyards is a small historic wine estate perched at 2000 feet overlooking Silicon Valley, in the Santa Cruz Mountain Appellation, about 50 miles south of San Francisco. Founded in 1945, it is recognized as one of the original “boutique” California winery properties, focusing on small lots of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Mount Eden’s lineage of estate bottled Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is the longest in California. Planted in austere, infertile Franciscan shale on a cool, exposed mountaintop, these low-yielding estate vineyards have consistently produced world-class wines for over a half-century. In 2007 Mount Eden acquired an additional 55 acres in the Saratoga foothills, which was christened Domaine Eden.
Mount Eden Vineyards also produces non-estate Chardonnays from the central coast, primarily Edna Valley. They have great success making Chardonnay from the Wolff Vineyard and are continually recognized as making outstanding wines from that region.
Since 1981 Jeffrey Patterson has guided the winemaking and grape growing at Mount Eden. His emphasis is on wine growing rather than winemaking; and an obsession with gentleness and naturalness in the handling of the grapes and wines is his ongoing passion.

Muccigrosso Vineyards is a family-run endeavor committed to producing small quantities of hand made fine wines designed to satisfy everybody. Since the early 80′s when we first planted vines on our Santa Cruz Mountain property, we have studied the winemaking process from vine to glass. Over the years we have learned a great deal about getting results with as little intervention possible. Thanks to a broadening fan base, recent seasonal fortune and a foolhardy sense of adventure, we have become a bonded winery.

Muns Vineyard brushes the sky on the Loma Prieta ridge top above Monterey Bay at 2600 feet looking out over Santa Cruz and the Monterey Peninsula. This is the highest Pinot Noir vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains, a prime growing region for this luscious winegrape. We enjoy the coastal climate of the mountains, with cool fog lapping at our feet in the summer, gentle breezes and sunlight — perfect for growing premium Pinot Noir and Syrah. Moderate days and cool nights, along with diligent personal attention in our 13-acre owner-operated vineyard, produces fruit with rich and complex flavors. We have blended Dijon clones 114, 115, 667 and 777 to provide a fruit-forward, complex and well-balanced Pinot Noir.
We grow 12 acres of Pinot Noir and source most of it to other wineries. You will find Muns Vineyard-designate Pinot Noirs under other wineries’ labels, in the Santa Cruz Mountains and elsewhere. We produce a small amount of Pinot Noir under our own label, as well as our Syrah.
Minimal intervention in the winery allows our unique terroir to shine. Barrel aging in 30% new oak for about 16 months adds soft tannins that accentuate, but not dominate, the beautiful fruit in this special wine. The wine drinks well now and is a delicious complement with food, and will bottle-age for years to come. Enjoy ‘heaven-in-a-bottle’ from our ridge top vineyard above the bay!

Odonata Wines is a small family winery based here on the West side of Santa Cruz. We do our best to focus on local grapes that are organic and grown sustainably. We work closely with the growers to ensure the highest quality wines from the vines to the glass.
The credo I subscribe to is the blending of old world winemaking methods and attitudes with new learning and a continuous search for improvement.
My desire is to create wines that are soft, supple, and with subtle complexity. Inspired from the traditional French style, these wines are designed to be food friendly. They are balanced in fruit, acidity, alcohol, and wood, with flavors and aromas that are cohesive with a lengthy finish.
Odonata wines are made to be accessible now, but will also age beautifully. They will always be hand made in small batches to exemplify the unique qualities of the varietal and vineyard.
Osocalis is a small, artisanal distillery in Soquel, California. The name Osocalis is the original Native American name for Soquel, today part of the greater Santa Cruz area. We use a small (100 gallon) antique alambic Charentais still, imported from Cognac, to produce brandies using grapes and apples from the cooler coastal regions of California. We strive to produce products that have the length, elegance and finesse of Old World brandies, such as Cognac and Calvados, but with the fruit intensity and structure of California wines.
Founded in the early 1990′s, Osocalis represents the second generation of small American distillers to use the combination of Old World techniques with New World fruit. The first generation of artisan distillers in California, including Germain-Robin in Ukiah and RMS in Carneros, clearly demonstrated the intensity and richness that can be achieved from brandies derived from California fruit. California brandy makers have the advantage (and the challenge!) of being able to blend a large number of grape varieties together for a more complex and interesting product, whereas French law strictly limits this practice. At Osocalis, our brandy is based primarily on Colombard and Pinot Noir, though we also distill a wide array of wines such as Marsanne, Riesling, Syrah, Grenache, and Semillon. In fact, it is the art of blending these brandies from a variety of fruit sources which gives California brandies their very special style.

P M STAIGER was established in 1973 on a ridge above Boulder Creek, in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The site had been an early twentieth century vineyard and winery operated by the Jim Locatelli family, but by the time we purchased the land the vines had long since disappeared and only a few large hoops from the old redwood tanks were all that remained of the cellar.
We replanted the vineyard and built a new house and winery, designed by Robert Walker. The varieties planted – Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,and Cabernet Franc – were determined by the types that had been historically grown successfully with good exposure in the higher elevations of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and, admittedly, our love of the French archetypes of these wines. The Cabernet was planted on a slope that faces almost due south, the Merlot to the west of this where it gets more of the northwest marine influence and so is somewhat cooler, and the Chardonnay on a slope facing southwest. Of equal if not greater importance is the elevation: our vineyards are above one thousand feet which is the boundary between the cold air in the valley and the warmer air in the thermal belts above. Since the vineyards came into full production we have made wine only from our own grapes. Having this one source, which we control down to the smallest detail, has provided an opportunity to perfect wine making to a degree that is rarely possible.

Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard has been making European-style, food-friendly, cellar-worthy wines since 1975. We are well-known for making Pinot Noir that can age beautifully for three decades.
Our basic philosophy is that wine should dance with food and make the food/wine experience more than a sum of the ingredients. This means making wines with moderate alcohol and oak so that the true characteristics of the grape varieties are expressed. You won’t find any high-alcohol, jammy, oaky wines here.
In 2008 we launched a second brand, Quinta Cruz, which features only varieties that originated on the Iberian Peninsula but are now grown here in California. These Portuguese and Spanish varieties include Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Souzao, Graciano, and Tinto Cão.
After more-or-less hiding away in the mountains for 32 years, the winery moved into the city of Santa Cruz in 2008 and opened the first tasting room in our long history. We are located in an area where you can walk to many other tasting rooms nearby and are only a few blocks from the beach and Natural Bridges State Park.

Founded on the principle that great wine can only come from a great source, Silvertip Vineyards was begun with the intent of producing wines that express the uniqueness of the soil and climate of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
In 1967 Gerald Nelson purchased 162 acres of Santa Cruz Mountain land, and soon after planted the land with Christmas trees. For 30 years, the property was known as Nelson’s Christmas Tree Farm and the family grew a variety of Christmas trees, the most prized trees among them were the slow growing Silvertip Firs.
In 1999 the Nelson family decided to exchange Christmas trees for grape vines and 9 acres of Pinot Noir and Syrah were planted. Over the years since establishing the vineyard, the high quality fruit that the estate produces has been sold to numerous wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains. In 2008 the family decided to venture out on their own and create a brand that could highlight the exceptional character of the fruit produced from the estate.

Pioneer winemaker Bernie Turgeon replanted the vineyard on Trout Gulch Rd in Aptos to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the early 80′s in his quest for the Holy Grail – Burgundian style wines of sublime character from the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Turgeon family had founded J. Lohr winery in the early 70′s along with partner Jerry Lohr. Bernie’s son Gerry took over production in 1999 upon Bernie’s retirement. Their efforts were assisted along the way by Paul Woffard and currently by Barry Jackson. There have been many successes during the two+ decades that lead to the current evolution of the winery which still features wines made from the old estate farmed by Richard Alfaro as well as hand selected wines from outstanding vineyards in the Central Coast. The winery is located on Swift St. within the Equinox Methode Champenoise Cellars. Trout Gulch wines are marketed throughout the Greater Bay Area by Monterey Bay Wine Company. Meet the Business Owner: Gerry Turgeon
I grew up in the business, planting an extensive vineyard in the Arroyo Seco, Monterey Co. along with my father in the early seventies. I attended UC Davis studying viticulture and enology. I worked the harvest and crush as well as hospitality and marketing at our family winery, formerly Turgeon & Lohr Winery until starting the first micro-brewery on the Central Coast in 1985 (Santa Cruz Brewing Co. & Front St. Pub) with my father, Bernie. It takes a lot of beer to make wine! We planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on Trout Gulch Rd. in the Aptos foothills and began producing award winning wines from the estate concurrently in 1987. The winery has evolved to its present incarnation as part of the Surf City Vintners along the Swift St. corridor in West Santa Cruz. I presently make about 1000 cases annually consisting mainly of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon blanc, Grenache blanc, Cinsault, Grenache, Merlot, and a rose blend known as “la belle petite poulette“.
