Originally from the Italian coastal town of Sestri Levante, the Olivieri family came to California in the 1950’s and opened their first “stand” next to the Santa Cruz Wharf. Aldo fished while his wife Inez ran their business selling pizza, candied apples and other fresh fare. Their young sons Mauro and Walter helped out, with Mauro just old enough to park cars on the Beach Street Hill.
The operation grew, a pancake house on Portola Avenue followed. Aldo still fished, but found time to make fresh pasta and gnocchi each weekend — with recipes used by the family to this day. The family recognized the opportunity at the Santa Cruz Harbor and negotiated the Harbor’s first lease in 1962, opening a bait and tackle shop. The following year the family opened the Aldo’s Harbor House Restaurant where the Crow’s Nest stands today. Moving to what is now the West Harbor, the operation became a restaurant in 1977.
Mauro, in the meantime, grew up, married Nori, and worked in San Francisco until moving back to Santa Cruz in 1980. Walter ran Aldo’s from its inception until he retired in 2003. The locals still call the adjacent beach Buffalo Beach, named after Walter’s German Shepherd dog.
Today, Mauro and Nori’s son John along with general manager Alfredo Servin have taken over active operation of Aldo’s Harbor Restaurant, with Mauro in the position of family patriarch once occupied by his dad. Recently renovated, the restaurant retains its original look and feel, but now patrons enjoy Aldo’s all year long. Known for its Eggs Benedict, calamari, fresh salmon, and exquisite ocean view, the restaurant accommodates its loyal patrons seven days a week.

Established in 1995, Café Cruz has been a favorite dining place for area residents and out-of-towners for over 16 years. Its atmosphere, menu selections and congenial staff are an ideal combination for enjoying a casual meal or celebrating a special occasion.
The restaurant offers something extra for every event. The interior décor was designed to offer an open, festive and casual atmosphere. Guests appreciate white tablecloth service in the spacious dining room. A classic French made Rotisol rotisserie is in full view featuring natural meats and poultry. Chefs can be seen working their magic in the open copper-backed kitchen. The murals depicting local scenes are the work of local artist Terry Wells.
Visitors enjoy cocktails and appetizers in our bar featuring a distinctive adobe-style fireplace (the creation of artist/contractor Shan Gilmore). The bartop itself is hewn from a solid piece of California fir, tracing its history back to the old Bass Lake Hotel at the turn of the 20th century.
For those who prefer open air dining, Cafe Cruz’s heated patio is just the ticket. The focal point of the patio is the beautiful Tuscan fireplace, surrounded by greenery and flowers. Cafe Cruz began in 1995 as a partnership between Chef Steve Wilson, and Jerry Neilsen, former proprietor of the popular Grapesteak Restaurant (which was located in the building Cafe Cruz now occupies). Their combined vision created a lively and fun restaurant, featuring food using fresh, high quality ingredients. Steve’s experience and love of cooking originated in Pennsylvania, Monterey and Santa Cruz establishments where he worked his way up in the culinary world.
In 2008, Jerry retired from the restaurant business and was bought out by Steve and his wife, Nikki Howe, to continue the tradition of creating pleaurable dining experiences at Cafe Cruz.

Saint Michael's AlleySaint Michael's Alley
St. Michael’s Alley was founded in 1959 by Vernon Gates. It was the first coffee house on the peninsula and was named for the the alley in London which is home to its first coffeehouse, founded in 1652. St. Mike’s bohemian atmosphere attracted many from the beatnick era and helped launch the careers of famous musicians and writers including the Grateful Dead, Joan Baez, Grayce Slick, Ken Kesey, Robert Hunter, and Jefferson Airplane. Vernon retired in 1994 and sold the restaurant to the current owners, Jenny Youll and Mike Sabina.
The original brasserie is still open for weekend brunch and private functions. A new location, one block away, was opened in March 2009 at 140 Homer Ave. This larger space has a separate full bar, outdoor seating, and an intimate dining room. Jenny and Mike spent 3 years designing and building the new St. Mike’s, with Mike acting as draftsman, architect, engineer, general contractor and carpenter.
There was an endless stream of friends and relatives who came from around the country to help us with the seemingly endless project.
Sandabs mission is bring to its patrons the very best fresh, seasonal, sustainable seafood from local and not so local sources. The menu features Davenport, ocean raised Abalone, Sandabs, Fresh Oysters, Mussels, Lobster (try the Lobster or Shrimp 3 cheese macaroni and cheese), seasonal Halibut and Salmon as well as White Sea Bass. Or savor the sweet white and pink Caribbean Shrimp or a Seafood Sauté that mixes it all up. In the late Fall, live Alaskan King Crab is flown in straight from the FV/North sea in Alaska. Later in the season, the oh-so-addictive Nantucket Bay Scallops (the sweetest and most tender you ever ate) are flown in directly from the Nantucket fisherman. Live, Chesapeake Bay Soft Shell Crabs come later in the Spring.

Wine Cellar History
The Wine Cellar Restaurant is located at 50 University Avenue in Old Town Shopping Center. But long before the shopping center, the site was something else entirely – Los Gatos’ first one-room schoolhouse, Los Gatos Central School, built in 1875 on what was then called School Street. In 1881, a second building was added, and in 1886 a new school was constructed at a cost of about $9000. The new school was closed down in 1909 and re-opened as the University Avenue School in 1923, styled after the Mission San Juan Capistrano, and served as the public grade school until 1961. *
Many a patron have shared fond memories of their time here as students many years ago. When plans were made to change the school into a shopping center in 1966, the restaurant space was mainly excavated by hand from beneath what used to be the school’s auditorium. The center had it’s ‘heyday’ in the seventies with many local artisans peddling their wares throughout the various shops…leather, pottery, jewelry, paintings, shoes, etc., and local talent performing in the Old Town Theater and the center’s Outdoor Ampitheater.
The Wine Cellar, then well known for it’s live music, cheese fondue and wine selection, is one of Los Gatos’ oldest restaurants and Old Town Center’s only remaining original tenant!
As you can imagine, after 30 years, the shopping center needed quite a facelift. From 1997 to 2001, Old Town had its transformation into the center you see today. The restaurant’s floor plan had been altered a few times throughout the years but nothing as major as the renovation that coincided with Old Town’s upgrade. If you have not been to the “new” Cellar, you will be amazed. We have carefully re-created the same intimate, cozy ambiance with a more upscale décor of golden washed walls, custom iron work, a beautiful cherry and bird’s eye maple bar and mica lighted booths. With the re-opening came the birth of our award-winning patio where you can enjoy scenic views of the beautiful Santa Cruz Mountains while sipping from your favorite wine or cocktail.
The Hauck family has owned the restaurant since 1990 and just celebrated the Wine Cellar’s 45th anniversary in 2011. We welcome you to our ‘home” where every guest is treated with warmth and care and the meals are not only delicious, but hearty and fresh!
