Day 1- Friday, April 11th

Wine Technical Session: “A Return to Paradise; Wine Making in a Mountain Terroir”

Learn and discover! This is a day long forum from 1pm – 4pm of continuing wine education for consumers and winemakers. The forum is followed by a VIP Wine Reception from 4:30pm – 6:00pm. SCMWA is proud to present two esteemed speakers: David Hirsch, founder and owner of the renowned Hirsch Vineyards; and Dr. Jean Jacques Lambert, Associate Research Soil Scientist, University of California, Davis. Mr. Hirsch is knowledgeable and passionate in his approach to understanding wine produced from the vineyard, and the importance of the vineyard site. Hirsch is most notable for earning a reputation as the first grower to draw attention to wine grapes grown on the cooler outer West Sonoma Coast Appellation, north of the Russian River.

Dr. Lambert will bring his soils expertise to describe important factors in viticulture that contribute to the successful cultivation of premium wines. He will focus on the chemical and physical properties of soils, highlighting the importance of the mysterious world of soil microbes and their importance to wine flavors and vine performance. Dr. Lambert’s powerful background as a research soil scientist combined with his French heritage make him perfectly suited to draw comparisons between Pinot Noir grown in Burgundy and in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Following this session, a panel of Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir producers will present a tasting of their wines while telling the story of the fruit and its journey to the glass. Panel members include:

Bob Varner, Varner Wines; Jeff Brinkman, Rhys Vineyard; Jamie Kutch, Kutch Wines.

Join us for this unforgettable event as we take you on this magical journey from vine to glass, and showcase an array of Pinot Noirs from the oldest mountain American Viticulture Area (AVA) in the United States.

Ticket price is $65 and includes VIP Wine Reception.
